The Economist – “This needn’t be France’s Brexit moment” by Pascal Cagni

July 3, 2024.

In Pascal Cagni’s column for The Economist’s “By invitation” series, he delves into the recent French snap election and its implications for the country’s competitiveness in the eyes of foreign investors. With extreme political parties gaining ground and whispers of “Frexit,” France’s political landscape is at a pivotal moment. However, the nation’s strong economic reforms under President Macron’s government and integration within the EU provide a safety net for investors.

Some foreign investors may be dismayed by the current political uncertainty, but they should not be deterred. France remains a top destination for foreign investment, boasting impressive gains in tech, reindustrialization, and entrepreneurship. Investors can be confident that France’s resilience and strategic importance within the EU will continue to foster growth and innovation.

While the immediate future is fraught with political risks, the French president could be judged more favourably in hindsight for calling the snap election. It is quite possible that the current political turmoil leads to the creation of a central bloc that, with the right leadership, could make it less likely that the populists gain control of both parliament and the presidency in three years’ time.
